OAA Demographic Survey

The OAA’s Demographic Survey, administered by Stratcom, is a voluntary, confidential tool that helps the Association measure its progress and develop relevant programs and initiatives as it works to better ensure Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in the architecture profession.

In 2020, OAA Council agreed to implement a demographic survey of its members that collects race-based and other equity-relevant data. Initially annual and now having moved to a biennial frequency, the survey is only one step in the development of a long-term data-collection strategy. All those with OAA status are encouraged to participate.

The information provided by those with OAA status is kept confidential and maintained in a secure information system, with access only granted to OAA staff and consultants for the purpose of analyzing trends in the profession. Information is presented as aggregated data without identifying individual responses.

The next survey will take place in 2026. See the links below to view the survey results from previous years:

How is the information used?

The information is used to prepare statistics about the architectural profession. It allows the OAA to assess the representation of the profession, identify and monitor trends and progress, and develop programs and initiatives to increase equity, diversity, and inclusion in the profession. The de-identified results of the survey will then be made accessible and transparent to the membership as well as to the general public.

How are the categories of self-identification selected?

The categories were originally developed in consultation with human rights and equity specialist Nicole Bernhardt. They are based on guidance set out in the Ontario Anti-Racism Data Standards, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and the federal Employment Equity Act.

Will my information be kept confidential?

Yes, the information you provide will be kept confidential. The OAA is working with research firm Stratcom, which is bound by federal privacy rules, as well as regulations and standards imposed by the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the global market research industry association ESOMAR.

The OAA receives results solely in aggregate tabular form, maintaining confidentiality and anonymity. The data will be maintained in a secure information system with access to the information granted only to OAA staff and consultants for the purpose of the analysis of trends in the profession. Any reporting of the information will be de-identified.

Do I have to answer the self-identification questions?

No, this annual survey is voluntary. The OAA strongly encourages your participation for the purpose of achieving a complete and representative picture of the composition of our profession. Your personal participation in this survey is a way to be part of our collective action toward advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion for all OAA members.

How do I participate?

All those with OAA status, whether members or those on the path to licensure, are strongly encouraged to participate. An invitation link is accessible through the annual Individual Renewal process (December to March).
